Uses of Fixed-Gear Mountain Bikes

Fixed-gear mountain bikes or fixed-wheel bicycles are a type of bicycle that does not have any freewheels. This means to say that it cannot coast since the pedals are always in motion when the rider is riding the bike.

Fixed gear mountain bikeThe cog or sprocket is bolted or threaded directly to a permanent rear hub. When the back wheel turns, the bikes pedals turn in the same direction as well. By stopping the rotation of the cranks, this will allow the cyclist to stop the motion of the bike without using any brakes and it also allows the cyclist to ride in reverse.

Uses of Fixed-Gear Mountain Bikes

The track bicycle is some form of a fixed-gear bicycle that is used for track cycling an arena for cycling. However, since fixed-gear mountain bikes is just a mountain bike that does not have any freewheel. A fixed-gear bicycle can also be almost any type of mountain bike.

Club cyclists and road racing cyclists would normally uses fixed-gear mountain bikes for training during winter with using a low gear ratio. Cyclists believes that by doing such, it will help enhance their pedaling style.

In the United Kingdom until the 1950s, it was ordinary for cyclists to use fixed-gear mountain bikes to determine how fast they could go. In 1959, Alf Engers won the British 25 mile time trial championship with a record of 55 minutes and 11 seconds. He actually rode an 84 inch fixed-gear bike.

Fixed-gear mountain bikes were also used and still in use in races in the end of the season hill climb during the time of autumn. In the urban North America, fixed-gear mountain bikes have become very popular due to the rise of distinct regional creative preference of design and finish details.

Dedicated fixed-gear mountain bikes are made in bigger numbers by reputable bicycle manufacturers. These bikes are normally inexpensive and are distinguished by comfortable road geometry. Fixed-gear bikes are also used in artistic cycling, bike polo and cycle ball.

Fixed-gear bikes are especially suited for track stand. It is a maneuver where the bicycle can be held standing, balanced upright having both of the cyclists feet on the pedals of the bike.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Fixed-Gear Mountain Bikes

One of the notable main advantages of fixed-gear mountain bikes is it being lightweight. Without the additional parts that are needed to make a fully geared drive train, fixed-gear mountain bikes will significantly weigh less than geared bikes.

In addition, fixed gear drive trains are more mechanically efficient than other bicycle drive train having the most transfer of power from the cyclist to the wheels. Because of this, a fixed gear bicycle will need less energy in any gear for it to move than a geared bicycle in the same gear.

In slippery terrains, some cyclists prefer to ride fixed gear bikes saying that the transmission gives increased feedback on back tire grip. Going down on a slope is more difficult as the cyclist must spin the bikes crank at a very high speed or use their brakes just to slowdown. Some cyclists believe that the high speed spin when descending enhances their flexibility, suppleness and pedaling performance on any type of bikes.

Riding on a fixed-gear bike is also thought by some as a way to develop a better pedaling style which is claimed to translate to a greater power and efficiency when used on a bike with freewheels. Riding a bike in high speeds around corner could be a very difficult task to complete especially for cyclists that are just starting. This is there is possibility that the pedals can hit the road which can result in losing control over the bike.
